Dj Skully vs. Dj Noize Gallery
If you've ever ventured anywhere near the DMC events or have spent hours watching the DVD's (or videos from my day) bemused by how the turntablist works the wheels of steel you will have heard of DJ Noize. Not only is he responsible for inventing the bubble scratch but in my view has put together some of the best lyrical (beat) juggles I have seen to date. From what I'd seen this man was almost the Batman of the Turntablist world. A legend.
Then I saw him live. With Skully. I'd previously seen Skully perform a set on video that got him to the DMC World Finals in 2002. An technically and musically brilliant, jaw dropping 6 minute routine where in particular he performed a short section of scratching. Well, word separation and the ultimate in turntable accuracy if I'm honest. Simply a sample saying "1,2,3,4,5". He separates each individual number cutting in each in turn from 1 through to 5 allowing a pause between each one. He then counts back from 5 down to 1, and repeats counting up then down again, increasing the speed at which the repetition of each number in sequence is performed. Vinyl handling and cutting on another level.
To see these guys perform a two hour slot was like nothing I'd seen before and unfortunately the pictures do them absolutely NO justice whatsoever. Example, one set of decks, two DJs. Noize starts by performing a simple two bar beat juggle. Skully takes over for the next two bars copying what Noize had done and adding a little extra. Noize takes over and repeats with a twist. All the time the beat to the listener carries on as if one DJ was doing it and they carry one changing back and forth until a mistake is made. Pure fun and showmanship at the highest level which pulled the crowd in even more. As for the scratching that goes without saying. If you need it explaining with streamable media I'm sure there will be some somewhere but I can't put what I have here as examples due to it breaching copyright laws of the Videos and such. Check DMC video "The Summit" for Noize proving his worth (and the bubble scratch!) - you'll also get QBert, A-Trak and Cashmoney. Well worth 15 quid of anyone's money. Awesome. If you only buy one DMC product, make it this. Please.
For Skully, check his radio station show which is currently on London's KissFm at the time of writing. This may be outdated though by the time you read this, so you may need to do a little further research for yourself! DMC World Finals of 2002 will show you the staggering quality and skill of this man.
Not only is all that but I had stage access for some top photos and close up viewing. The best night I've ever played at. Unbelievably good on every conceivable level. I had a chat after with them, got a posed photo and they were both kind enough not only to talk rubbish and scratching with me but agreed to sign my record box!! Not an ego in sight. Absolutely tops....
And I got to play as well. What more could a budding DJ want? Apart from custard, obviously.
