My friends at the time were loving the radio in the early 90's, however, commercial dance music never really did it for me. I discovered hardcore and thought to myself 'This is my kind of music!' and by the time Charly by The Prodigy hit the masses I was well and truly hooked. Tapes were the way forward, buying and exchanging to get as big a collection as possible. Very few of my friends liked the music and we certainly couldn't drive, so at that point there was no chance of getting to events.
Everything changed when university came round though. Off to Coventry it was - 1st year, moved into a house with 3 unknown people, 2 of them constantly regailed us with their weekly trips to events, mostly Equinox at Milwaukee's, the other we found had a pair of 1210's and a stack of records, mostly house, but there were a few bits of hardcore there. He let us use his decks and the DJ'ing thing was now on. The other 2 were more sold on it, 1 blew his student grant on a set and a mixer. He and the other spent the rest of their available money on records, spent all their time doing it - University quickly ended for them!!
I was far more reserved, besides, to start with I couldn't pick up this mixing lark and didn't have the money to spend on a bucket load of records!! I did get to some of the nights out though, we went to Diehard in Leicester several times which I thought was amazing. Awesome nights out!! The summer break after that 1st year, I managed to bring some of my mates from home to my first big all nighter - Dreamscape 20. That was probably the best event I have ever been to.
2nd year changed slightly, I again rented the same house with the 1st student with the decks who was having to repeat his first year. I started to pick records up here and there that I wanted and liked and the mixing picked up. He came back from uni one night with a couple of other blokes, one of which turned out to be Mandrick. At the time we were into the same kind of music so that was that. The name of the game quickly turned into learning as much as possible and bouncing ideas off of each other and playing out was the ultimate ambition.
Uni for me was only a 2 year course, so off to work it was. I had a windfall soon after starting and got me a set of 1210's. That was it then, buying new records, mixing, recording, sending them off periodically. Nothing really came of it. I did get on the guest list a couple of times at 'The Sanctuary' Milton Keynes at various events, but I wanted to be behind the decks, not dancing! The mixing thing started just to become more of a hobby, taking up to much of my time, particularly for my girlfriend at the time!! That is certainly a mental note to keep hold of in the future I'd advise anybody!! I started experimenting with other forms of dance music as well, mostly House & Trance as something else - you can't be Hardcore 24/7 can you?
Mandrick is still one of my best friends many years, we frequently link up and although his tastes have changed, it's still good to jump on the decks together and mix it up. He has been more succeful than me in getting out and I have been fortunate enough to tag along, supporting and doing some as well.
For me now, mixing is a hobby, I love it, I love the music, and as long as I do, I'll keep playing. I think being a 'Bedroom DJ' will be as far as I get, unless something dramatic happens, Now get yourself over to my mixes, download, enjoy!! and for all you organizers out there.......go on.......you know you want to get me playing...........
